The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool that measures and tracks hunger globally as well as by region and by country. Entitled “Protection of civilians from conflict-induced hunger”, the briefing coincided with the release of the Global Report on Food Crises 2020.. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that about 815 million people of the 7.6 billion people in the world, or 10.7%, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2016.

Almost all the hungry people live in lower-middle-income countries. The GHI is calculated annually, and its results appear in a report issued in October each year. The report is part of tracking progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2 Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger, promote food security and end all forms of malnutrition by 2030. Created in 2006, the GHI was initially published by the US-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Germany-based Welthungerhilfe.
